looking back now, I realize how silly the education system was and continues to be.. atleast those in schools and junior colleges. They place so much importance on academic excellence that kids are finding it so darned difficult to hold on to this runaway train! The pace is so blinding, I feel as if I gave the SSC ages back!
Getting an 80-85% then assured one a seat in any good college in the 1st or max. 2nd merit lists; but, today, that sort of number on your marksheet will place you in the league of yesterday's 60-70% scorers.. Its really sad. And besides, these marks hold no water, they're just numbers reflecting one's memorization ability. Nowhere is it clear that academic excellence at age 15 paves a concrete path to success in later-life.
Its high time the government devalued the SSC and HSC exams, made them optional, or devise a system that evaluates a child on his/her own nook of excellence.. how on earth is a 15-year-old supposed to know whether commerce, science, or arts or whatever is their field of future expertise? How can one decide then and there!?
The education system encourages the harvest of students into stereotype streams, making students believe there are only certain things they can be good at, and deciding that for them on the basis of a geometry problem or social science short note.. now thats scripting a crazy tale..
I agree with you.. All that today's education system seems to be doing is build a series of exams that simply puts "an educated" mark on our profiles.
ReplyDeletethe numbers may be different now but we had to make that 'big decision' in much the same way. i'd rather there were a system that led students gradually into their stream of choice. introduce a subject where they can choose a project they want to work on based on their interests...instead of an ambiguous subject like value education or evs.
