Walter Sobchak is awesome. He is the example of a short fuse. The transition of Walter from a calm, inert guy to a flaring, beretta-in-your-face thug is instantaneous. Smoky tried to cheat in the bowling league game by attempting to enter a strike where he had crossed the line. Walter warns him, coerces him to enter a '0' on his score card, which Smoky obviously decides against doing. Walter whips his revolver out, sticks it in Smoky's face and gently requests him to mark it zero. This is Walter. He makes repeated references to his time in Vietnam, has awesome flagrant dialogues "You're entering a world of pain!".. "This is what happens when you find (f**K) a stranger in the alps (a**)"..Walter provides the entertainment factor in the movie that is riddled with several subplots, none that seem to add up.
The Dude on the other hand, is a dude. Carefree is his middle name. He's happy to live life on available resources, drinks milk and adores his drawing room rug. Always seen in flip flops, shorts and a bathroom robe. Walter and the Dude are the best of friends.
Jésus is their bowling competition, more of an adversary, who loves to do nothing more than remind the above duo how he'l be decimating them in the league game on Wednesday.
The movie leaves you wondering.. why?
No, The Big Lebowski isnt' really about bowling, or rivalries, or any particular theme or concept. It jus conveys that movies dont need to deliver a message all the time. Something like Pulp Fiction, but thats' a totally different (non)plot.
